History of Astrology

Astrology has been around for thousands of years. Early man realized that everything in the cosmos in interconnected. As individuals we are our own galaxies with parallel realities as they relate to all the galaxies in the universe. The historical precedent with respect to the validity of astrology has been echoed throughout the ages. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine said, “A physician without a knowledge of Astrology has no right to call himself a physician.”

There was a time when the great astronomers were also astrologers. They studied the physiology of the universe as well as the psychology. One such astrologer, Johannes Kepler said, “The soul of the newly born baby is marked for life by the pattern of the stars at the moment it comes into the world, unconsciously remembers it, and remains sensitive to the return of configurations of a similar kind.” The brilliant psychiatrist, Carl Jung, used astrology as the core of his practice, which caused him to break with his mentor, Freud. Jung wrote, “We are born at a given moment, in a given place and, like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season of which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more.” Jung also wrote, “Astrology is assured of recognition from psychology, without further restrictions, because astrology represents the summation of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.”

Methodology

In college and graduate school I studied theater and became an actor. In Hollywood my career morphed into screenwriting. I now live in New Hope, PA, where I write stage plays. I realized some years ago that the tools of the writer and astrologer are the same. First, we must define the character (real or fictitious) in terms of the distinct, individual narrative. What do we want? (Objective) Why do we  want what they want? (Motive) How do w achieve our objectives? (Action) What are the obstacles that prevent us from achieving our objectives (conflict). Within the context of astrology the planets, there placements in the signs and house give us tremendous insight into the conditions that characterize our life journey - our narratives.  The crucial element in the equation of “fate” is self-determination and the franchise of free will. It has been said that the stars “impel,” but do not “compel.” We are predisposed to certain positive and negative elements in our chart. We have the choice to battle the negative and turn them into positive. We have the choice to manifest the positive to the full extent of our potential.

I believe that the tools that have evolved within me have served to help me as a writer, to help navigate the challenges of my own life, and to help others process their issues and deal with positive choice making.
